Symptom Guide

What your AC is telling you

The same symptom can come from a cheap part or a major component, which is why a proper diagnosis matters. Here's what usually sits behind the problems Cape Coral homeowners call about most, and what to do before and after you call.

Blowing warm air

Often a failed capacitor or contactor at the outdoor unit, a tripped breaker, or a very dirty filter. Less often, low refrigerant from a leak or a failing compressor.

Check that the thermostat is on Cool and the filter isn't clogged. If the outdoor fan isn't spinning, turn the system off and call — running it can damage the compressor.

Running nonstop, never reaching the setting

Restricted airflow (filter, dirty coil), low refrigerant, or a system that's undersized or losing efficiency with age. On peak August afternoons a healthy system can run long cycles, but it should still slowly gain ground.

Note the thermostat reading over a few hours. If the indoor temperature keeps climbing, schedule a diagnosis.

Water around the indoor unit

Almost always a clogged condensate drain. Florida humidity feeds algae in the line, and when it backs up the float switch shuts the AC off — or the pan overflows.

Turn the system off to prevent water damage and call us. Clearing and treating the drain is usually a quick fix.

Ice on the refrigerant lines or indoor coil

Low airflow or low refrigerant is letting the coil drop below freezing. Running it frozen can push liquid refrigerant back to the compressor.

Switch the thermostat to Off (fan On is fine) to let it thaw, then call. Don't chip at the ice.

Breaker trips when the AC starts

A failing compressor, a shorted motor, a weak capacitor, or a wiring fault. This is an electrical problem, not a nuisance.

Reset it once. If it trips again, leave it off and call — repeated resets can damage the system or the wiring.

Grinding, buzzing, or burning smell

Worn motor bearings, a stuck contactor, or overheating electrical parts. Burning smells mean the system should stop running.

Turn the system off at the thermostat and call. For a burning smell, also switch off the breaker.
